Jon Scherer

I have been doing kendo since 2000, and reached sandan in 2007.  I have been practicing jodan since I was ikkyu.  It has not always been easy, but I am fully committed to this way.  Kendo for me has been a calling since I was very young.  I can remember begging my parents to send me away somewhere that I could learn kendo.  Unfortunately this was not possible.  I studied other martials arts, including other forms of swordsmanship until I moved to Seattle and began kendo at the age of 31 at Cascade Kendo Kai.  I am currently with Highline Kendo Kai under the watchful eye of Jeff Marsten Sensei.

About Me

Samkange Sensei

I first met Samkange Sensei when he moved to Seatle from NYC and joined Cascade Kendo Kai shortly after I started there.  This was the first time I had ever seen jodan performed and I was immediately taken with the idea.  Several years later, when Samkange Sensei announced to our dojo, “Anyone who wants to learn jodan, come down to this end with me,”  I expected a stampede.  I was the only one who stepped forward from our dojo.  Little did I know what I was getting myself into, but I knew right away that I would not be turning back.  Although it has not always been easy to commit fully to this path, and there were times when I hesitated, I fully embrace jodan and practice it every chance I get.  Samkange Sensei is currently godan and located at the Bellevue Kendo Club Dojo.  I try to cross swords with him as often as I can and take every opportunity to learn the ways of jodan from him.
